Covering all the skills you need to navigate in the mountains, hills  & countryside- step by step, using
a paper map and compass. Plus the use of digital technologies & your mobile phone.

These courses are inclusive, therefore, there are no tests or exams etc.  They are very much hands on, you learn by doing, therefore you remember. Never be afraid to ask any question. Don't be silent. 
There is no such thing as a silly question!

The one day Basic Navigation Course is for those who wish to learn to navigate safely in the outdoors, using a map & compass. Electronic devices can fail. 
The basic one day course costs £65.00

The two day course offers more depth of knowledge and skill, with far more practice, learning to Micro Navigate The two days do not have to be taken consecutively, allowing time to practice their new skills before progressing to the next level 
The two day basic & advanced course costs £110.

Course objectives - One & two day courses
One Day Course - Basic - £65.00

  • Understanding map scale : 1:25,000 / 1:50,000 / 1:40,000
  • Map legend/symbols, what they mean.
  • Obtaining a grid reference. Grid lines.
  • Contours, how to interpret:- features & steepness
  • Using a compass, the various parts.
  • The difference between:- True North, Grid North & Magnetic North.
  • Setting the map with & without using a compass
  • Taking a bearing / back bearing.
  • Magnetic variation. 
  • Timing, pacing & Naismith's rule
  • Access rights
  • Leave no trace

One Day Course - Advanced - £65.00 per person

 

  • Revision on the contents of the Basic Course
  • Decipher - what's on the map, to what's on the ground.
  • Plan and follow a route.
  • Timing, pacing & Naismith's rule.(Includes a free gift)
  • Completing a route card
  • Additional map reading skills :- aiming off, hand railing, attack points, way marks, dog legging, aspect of slope, catcher points
  • Micro navigation - how and when to use the appropriate skills 

What is included in the course?


 

  • A4 Laminated 1:25000 Ordnance Survey map of the selected area (Yours to keep)
  • Use of a Compass if you don't have your own, for the day.
  • A5 laminated training and hints pages (Yours to keep)

    Duration

    Each day will last 6 to 8 hours, during the day you will be walking about 5 to 8 miles.
    The mileage may sound low, as you will be learning and practicing new skills along the way.
    The courses are held outside, in all weathers, no class room work - real life experience.
    The course is quite intensive. The training is in simple steps, they are fun and no pressure placed upon you. Theory is backed up by practical demonstrations and practical use by you.

    What is not included

    Travel to and from the training location.
    Food and drink during the course, bring your own  

Combined Basic & Advanced Navigation Course - £110

By pre-booking the Basic & Advanced Courses together you can make 
a 20% saving on booking the courses separately. The days do not have to be taken consecutively, but within a 3 month period.
 It is advisable not to take them together unless you have previous map & compass skills, as the days can be quite intense.
By taking the days separately you have chance to practice the skills you have learnt in the Basic Course, before progressing onto the Advanced Course.

Night time navigation - £45 per person 
Starting an hour before sunset & lasting for about 3 to 4 hours.
Learn how to navigate safely at night, it is necessary to learn micro navigation, during the hours of
darkness, - aiming off, handrailing, etc to reach your destination. Using red not white light on your torch. (Includes a free gift).

Chop Gate is located close to : - Stokesley, Ingleby Arncliffe, Osmotherley, Northallerton, Great Ayton, Middlebrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Helmsley, Sproxton & Ampleforth.

Hawnby is located close to : - Thirsk, Sowerby, Rivevaulx, Helmsley, Sproxton, Harome, Gilling East, Carlton, Thornton-le-Street, Ampleforth & Osmotherley.

You need to carry sufficient equipment to keep you safe, but not too heavy to prevent you enjoying your day. Hydration is of the up most importance.
