Two days, (one nigh)t or Three days (two nights) backpacking trips, in the remoter part of the Yorkshire Dales or North York Moors.
These will be truly wild camps, not at camp sites, camping above the highest field boundary. Late finishes & early starts required.
Apart from parts of Dartmoor (still), camping in the wild is still illegal (Trespass, if asked to move by the landowner, don't argue, they have the legal right to ask you to move on).
Each day of the expedition cost £65 a day, if using your own equipment. £105 a day if you need to borrow a tent/rucksack/ sleeping bag/sleeping bag liner/gas stove/ plates & cups.
You will need to supply your own clothing & water bottle/flask/ drinks bladder etc
I use the Terra Nova Helm 1 as my 3 season tent - Spring to Autumn - it only weighs 1.5 kg and there is plenty of space for me, Lola and all my gear.
I also use a Hunka bivi bag during the summer, when I want to travel ultra light.
On my shopping list for the 2023/24 winter season is the Terra Nova Trident 2, a two person tent that is more sturdy than the Helm 1, which has never let me down in winter, The 'Trident 2' will give me more room on those long winter nights.
I am always looking for the best quality at the best price, I find these down and also synthetic sleeping bags by https://hykeandbyke.co.uk/ to be great value for money. I don't believe in just paying for a "name".
Again really good quality bags without the hefty price label. I have 4 of their sleeping bags two 4 season bags and two 2 season bags.
Lola has her own sleeping bag as well that weighs 1Kg, she loves it and it stops her trying to use mine. The Alcot sleeping bag for dogs, excellent
I'm a great believer in "leave no trace" when backpacking, which included no trace of wood fires, in my opinion there is no need for it.
It just ruins it for the next person along. I tend to use LPG gas stoves, they are easy to operate and heat up water & food quickly with no fuss.
Plus no black residue you get from liquid fuel stoves.
When backpacking you will literally be carrying your home. There is that balance between weight and the comforts you want whilst camping. In order to make that "carry" as comfortable as possible, it does require a bit of the splash of the cash. Modern rucksacks are so much better at handling loads than those of the 1980's. I loved my Karrimore Jaguar 2.
Too keep out selves fuelled during the day, we will need to consume over our 2000 calories a day.
Try to keep each days weight of food to less than a Kilo a day.
Here is "my list" of gear that I might carry backpacking, not all at once.
It depends upon the time of year and the terrain etc.
Some gear can be shared, a tent, cooker etc can be divided between two people. A two person tent with two persons in it, is far warmer than a two person tent with just one person in.
A body generates a lot of heat,
